Rotten Robbery Morning

6 Jan

What a way to start the day. Our seemingly quiet little life invaded by a car robber. Well, to clarify, the car wasn’t stolen but the GPS and an ipod were.

That’s right. When we came downstairs to our car this morning, which was parked in our spot in the alley behind our apartment in Dupont, the passenger window was shattered, the documents in the glove compartment were strewn everywhere, CDs are likely missing, and for sure our GPS (hidden) and Ipod are gone.

I have to say that it made me feel pretty sick to my stomach – it’s such an invasion of personal space. And to make matters worse, we had already put Artie in the backseat of the car on the driver’s side, and he was so excited to go to doggie daycare, and we had to rip him out of the car and put him back in the apartment. Little guy was practically crying – he just didn’t understand.

So, now MJD is dealing with the police and insurance. And I’m at work feeling frustrated. I just keep reminding myself how thankful I am that the car was robbed and not the apartment.

Oh, but two weird things:

1. In the middle of the night Artie started barking and we didn’t know why. I wonder if he heard the window shatter. (Apparently, no one just breaks windows anymore – there’s some device that quietly shatters the window so no one can hear it, except maybe a dog.)

2. Our car is parked in the middle spot right behind our apartment. Why would anyone rob the middle car? Wouldn’t it be harder to maneuver there?

Alas, if you’ve had your car broken into and want to share, please do. I check the updates on Borderstan every day and it’s hard to not grow a bit concerned. I was keeping a pretty optimistic outlook on it all, but this may set me back a bit. It’s such a shame that the city can’t get a handle on this.

I know the first thing I would do — More Lights!

Dupont is dark. The side streets are really dark. And for sure our alley is dark (in fact the city is constantly having to change the light in our alley – it goes out all the time). Maybe some more lights would make residents feel safer walking around, and make robbers less likely to target the area. Obviously, there’s no one fix, but it would make me feel better.

Oh and MJD just suggested that we put a camera in the alley also – brilliant man!

My older sister had her car stolen once. In front of our church. On Christmas Eve. It was one of those – you know that person is going to hell moments.

Sorry about your car, the lost devices, the annoyance, and the feeling of violation. All can be replaced/repaired; and as you noted, it could have been worse.

Yes, thank you for the reminder! Clearly the thief is in a bad spot, but dare I say also a little bad at his gig. When we got the car back from being repaired last night, we noticed the ipod was still there…Why leave an ipod?!
